6. Conclusions and design principles for transferability

This module has presented a practical methodology for designing educational puzzles aligned with social entrepreneurship competences. In the DEGSE approach, puzzles are learning-driven: they are built around competences that become visible through action, decision-making, consequences and reflection.

6.1 Core design principles

Across all chapters, several principles remain essential.

1. Start from learning outcomes

Every puzzle must begin with a clearly defined, action-based learning outcome.

If the competence is not visible in player behaviour, redesign the puzzle.

2. Make decisions and trade-offs unavoidable

Competence development occurs when learners must choose between imperfect options.

If players can progress without making a meaningful decision, the educational value decreases.

3. Ensure visible cause–effect relationships

Learners should understand how their decisions influence outcomes.

Consequences must:

  • Reflect real-world logic
  • Reinforce the targeted competence
  • Support reflection


Arbitrary penalties or disconnected outcomes weaken learning.

4. Structure progressive challenge

Game flow should support gradual competence development:

  • Begin with clarity and achievable tasks
  • Increase complexity intentionally
  • Integrate multiple competences in later stages


Difficulty must stretch learners without overwhelming them.

5. Manage cognitive load

Learning depth depends on reasoning quality, not confusion.

Design puzzles that:

  • Have clear objectives
  • Present structured information
  • Avoid unnecessary complexity
  • Allow space for reflection


6. Test, observe, refine

Educational puzzle design is iterative.

Testing helps identify:

  • Confusion points
  • Imbalanced difficulty
  • Misalignment between mechanics and competence
  • Cognitive overload


Refinement strengthens both engagement and pedagogical coherence.

6.2 Transferability across contexts

The methodology can be adapted to formal education, non-formal youth work, informal learning settings and online or hybrid environments. Transferability depends on applying the design principles rather than copying formats: youth workers should adapt competences, scenarios, complexity and tools to their local context while preserving learning alignment.

6.3 Final self-assessment checklist

Before implementing your educational escape experience, confirm:

  □ Decisions and trade-offs are unavoidable.
  □ Cause–effect relationships are clear and coherent.

6.4 Final design reminder

If the theme, digital tools and visual layer were removed, the competence development pathway should still be visible. Educational robustness comes from alignment, clarity and intentionality.
