3. Structuring the game flow from a challenge perspective
Game flow refers to how individual puzzles are organised, sequenced, and connected within the overall learning experience.
In the DEGSE framework, game flow is not primarily about storytelling. It is about structuring a progressive learning pathway in which competences are developed gradually through increasing complexity, interdependence, and responsibility.
Each stage should contribute to a coherent competence trajectory rather than functioning as an isolated challenge.

This chapter helps designers define stages, learning focus, progression and the most suitable structure: linear, branching or hybrid.
3.1 Definition of stages, rooms, and challenge sequences
Educational escape experiences are typically organised into stages (or rooms). Each stage represents a coherent pedagogical unit with a specific purpose.
A well-structured sequence:
- Builds confidence at the beginning
- Introduces increasing constraints
- Requires integration of competences at the end
Step 1 – Decide the number of stages
Before designing puzzles, decide the number of stages according to session duration, group size, participant experience and number of competences addressed. For a 60–90 minute session, 3–5 stages are usually sufficient; beginner groups may need fewer. Quality and coherence are more important than quantity.
Step 2 – Assign a pedagogical function to each stage
Stages should reflect a progression of learning.

Continuity principle
Earlier stages should prepare learners for later ones by reinforcing ways of thinking, decision logic and interpretation strategies. If the final stage does not require competences developed earlier, the sequence should be revised.
Common structural mistakes
Avoid isolated stages, unnecessary technical difficulty, too many new mechanics at once, and final puzzles that do not integrate previous learning.

3.2 Linear and branching challenge structures
After defining stages, decide how learners move between them. The choice between linear and branching structures should be pedagogical, not technical.

Designing progressive challenge flow
Difficulty progression should reflect competence development, not only harder puzzles. It may increase through more variables, greater uncertainty, stronger interdependence and higher responsibility for consequences. Sudden difficulty spikes should be avoided.

Cross-stage cause–effect relationships
Strong game flow includes consequences that extend beyond a single stage. Early decisions may influence resources, stakeholder trust, access to information or final evaluation. At least one early-stage decision should have a visible later impact.
